Back to School Staying Up-to-Date on Well Child Examinations and Immunizations

As we send our children back to school to learn and play together, let Divine Savior Healthcare help you prepare your family for a healthy school year.

Well Child Exams

Well child exams are important for your child as they grow and develop. From birth to 18 years old, children are recommended to get well child exams to ensure necessary preventative care. Below is a list of recommended ages to get well child exams:

Sports Physicals

Children who are participating in sports may require a sports physical for participation. Even if one is not required, it is still highly recommended. This physical will help determine if it is safe for a child to participate in a certain sport. The appointment includes both a family history and physical examination. To help you prepare for the family history it’s best to arrive with the family history form completed and be prepared to answer questions about the following:

  • serious illnesses among family members
  • illnesses that you had when you were younger or may have now, such as asthma, diabetes, or epilepsy
  • previous hospitalizations or surgeries
  • allergies examples: allergies to insect bites, food allergies
  • past injuries including concussions, sprains, or bone fractures
  • whether you've ever passed out, felt dizzy, had chest pain, or had trouble breathing during exercise
  • any medications that you are on including over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements, and prescription medications

Immunizations

It is highly recommended for school-aged children, preschoolers to college students, to get vaccines. Vaccinations can help prevent the spread of disease and ensure long-term health for both your child and others.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC has a recommended lists of vaccination dates and dosages to help you stay up-to-date. If you’re behind on dosages it’s not too late. The CDC also provides a list of recommended catch-up immunizations for your reference.

Please find recommended immunization schedules for children, ages 0 – 18 years old, on the following link:
