MY STORY

"I feel like I try to truly listen to what patients are saying. If you listen closely, you can decipher what patient's main concerns, questions and desires are even if they don't say these things outright. This helps you as a provider to make that visit and any upcoming visits worthwhile for the patient because you can address those things and allow for a positive, rewarding experience."

— Caitlin Gunderson, PA-C

As a high school student, Caitlin Gunderson, PA-C, was introduced to the field of medicine. Her first experience was a demonstration of sutures (stitches) being applied onto an orange. Fascinated, her interest for medicine sparked. "Once I saw that demonstration and learned what a PA-C did, I thought that would be a good fit for me," she says.

Earning a Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Marquette University, Caitlin graduated with honors. In the nationwide certification exam, she scored amazingly in the 98th percentile. She also earned placement on the Dean's List for her academic excellence throughout her schooling.

While doing her clinical rotations, Caitlin was fortunate to gain insight into various methods of practice that can differ within areas. "I am happy to have been able to experience working as a healthcare provider on two reservations. This has helped me gain a perspective on the unique way healthcare is delivered to those populations," she says.

After experiencing other parts of the country, Caitlin has chosen to practice locally where it all began. Growing up in the Madison area, the nearby natural activities are something she has a passion for.

"I love being outdoors," she tells us. "I love hiking, biking, camping and boating. I have spent time hiking and camping in Rocky Mountain National Park all over Colorado. I love being active in Madison: going to the Farmer's Market, going to Badger football games, being lakeside at the Union Terrace."

The atmosphere at Divine Savior Healthcare is one in which Caitlin fits well. Her outlook on medicine and family go hand in hand with the mission of the hospital and the needs of our growing community.

"By serving a smaller community, Divine Savior Healthcare is able to really personalize the healthcare experience for their patients," she mentions. "The most rewarding aspect of being a Physician Assistant in Family Medicine is forming relationships with the patients and families you interact with. By having a healthcare provider they trust and respect, patients will have a better healthcare experience which will hopefully result in them living a healthier life."

The best advice Caitlin ever received came from her father. "Every setback is the starting point for a comeback," she shares.
