Postpartum Care
After recovering from the delivery of your baby, you and your new baby will be moved back to your room to rest and recuperate. Provided that the baby is stable, he or she will be in the room with you for your entire stay, so plan to "room-in" with your new baby. In the event that special assistance is needed, we are available to provide care for your infant.
Divine Savior Healthcare recommends that breastfeeding be chosen for your child. Experts agree that it is the superior method of nutrition and offers many health benefits to both mother and baby. Lactation consultants are on hand to aid in the process during your stay and beyond.

Choosing not to breastfeed is a personal choice and may be necessary at times due to certain medical conditions, maternal medications or for personal reasons. Whatever your choice may be, Divine Savior Healthcare is here to help you succeed in caring for your new baby.
Circumcision, if desired, is typically performed the day following birth and is a brief procedure done right in the Birthing Center.
Women who have undergone a vaginal birth are typically released to return home after one to two days. Cesarean births generally stay for three days following the procedure.

New mothers are given basic necessary personal items for after the birth of their baby. Although extensive care is not usually required after giving birth, it will be necessary to use absorbent materials for up to a few days after you deliver.
A Divine Savior Healthcare diaper bag is provided so you can take leftover items, if any. Occasionally, topical cream for personal pain relief may be provided. Please prepare for necessary items to be on hand after you arrive home.
Your baby will need to be seen by his or her doctor for a thorough check up and to be weighed one week after the delivery. You are encouraged to schedule the appointment for this as soon as possible after the birth. If you choose to breastfeed, your baby should be seen in the OB department or by his or her doctor for a weight check and breastfeeding assessment. This appointment will be scheduled on your behalf by our staff.
