High school students interested in becoming certified athletic trainers and learning about other health care careers are encouraged to participate in Divine Savior Healthcare's first Student Athletic Trainer Education Program this summer.
The program will span four days and includes classroom instruction, guest speakers from various medical professions, emergency situation demonstrations and instruction in CPR. Students will learn the basics of anatomy, injury prevention, immediate injury care, injury rehabilitation and taping techniques. Speakers will address student questions regarding potential careers as a physician, physician's assistant, emergency medical technician (EMT), athletic trainer, and physical and occupational therapist. Plus, students will participate in a simulated emergency with Divine Savior Healthcare EMTs.
"One of the unique aspects of this program is that each student will receive instruction in CPR," says Sue Condon, director of Rehabilitation Services at Divine Savior Healthcare. "That means each student will be eligible for CPR certification at the program's completion, and they'll receive a card recognizing their competence and training."

In addition, each student will have the opportunity to complete a field-work experience by job shadowing an athletic trainer during school visits or clinical duties. This extra field experience will be organized after the Student Athletic Trainer Education Program based on each individual's desire for extra exposure to athletic training or the health care field.
"This program is a great opportunity for students interested in athletic training or other medical careers," says Matt Bekkedal, Divine Savior athletic trainer. "High school team managers and athletic training students will get the knowledge they need to effectively assist in the prompt, attentive care of injured athletes at their school. We also wanted to provide an opportunity for those considering health care careers to hear from guest speakers, participate in real-life demonstrations, and learn basic medical techniques."
