Pain Relief
Pain relief during the process of labor and delivery is typically an important factor in the minds of expectant mothers. Divine Savior Healthcare will support each individual’s decision regarding the management of their labor pain.
Many drug-free methods of pain relief can prove to be successful. Relaxing whirlpool baths, aromatherapy, massage showers and personal massage can all be utilized during the early process of your labor. Distractions such as music can also be helpful.
In the later stages of labor, many women find that they require stronger pain relief. IV medications are available if you choose to do so. Epidural and intrathecal analgesia are available 24 hours a day at Divine Savior Healthcare.
With your doctor's approval, you do not need to reach a certain level of dilation before requesting an epidural, nor do we believe that there is a certain window of time which one must be administered. Intrathecal analgesia, also known as a walking epidural, is a lighter application of epidural pain relief which allows for greater mobility due to the lower concentration of medication.
Mothers who choose to labor without the aid of medications will be allowed to do so at their will. If you change your mind, that’s fine too. We at Divine Savior Healthcare do not promote or favor one choice of pain control over another.
All medications carry the risk of side effects. Although our staff are highly trained and cautious of all possible interactions, ultimately the choice of pain relief is that of the patients. We encourage you to talk to your physician about all potential complications prior to making any decisions.
