Autism Services

Autism is a complex brain disorder that affects many aspects of child development, including how a child talks, plays and interacts. The symptoms of autism vary widely, as does the impact of the disorder. Some autistic children have only mild impairments, while others have greater obstacles to overcome.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) includes autistic disorder, Asperger’s syndrome, pervasive development disorder, Rett syndrome and childhood disintegrative disorder. They are complex disorders which can greatly impact a child’s ability to communicate effectively. These disorders also have a significant impact on families.

Children with an ASD have increased difficulty with social interaction, communication skills and developmental language skills. Fortunately, early intervention can significantly improve the outcomes for children with autism- as well as have a positive impact on the entire family.

According to the Autism Society, with appropriate services and supports, training and information, children on the autism spectrum will grow, learn and flourish, even if at a different developmental rate than others.

In light of this optimistic research, Divine Savior Healthcare is proud and excited to be able to offer the community local services which can improve the lives of many of our community members and their families.

With our team of highly-trained speech-language pathologists and audiologists directly on site, Divine Savior Healthcare has the resources available to treat an individual with autism at any age.

Common questions when considering treatment for autism:

Does everyone with autism need treatment?

The choice for treatment is your own. There are no rules or regulations saying you need to pursue treatments for a family member with an autism spectrum disorder. Divine Savior Healthcare is acknowledging the insight provided by the Autism Society, who state that appropriate services and supports allow children on the autism spectrum to grow, learn and flourish. According to the Autism Society, early intervention can reduce lifetime treatment costs by two-thirds.

Difficulty with social and communication skills are trademark characteristic of the disorders. We realize that many with an autism spectrum disorder are classified as “high functioning,” while others have greater difficulty with verbal communication or auditory sensations. Divine Savior Healthcare wants our community aware that these services are available. The choice to utilize these services, and to what degree, is a personal choice that you and your family are encouraged to weigh against your unique situation.

Can I be with my child during therapy?

This is your choice. Ultimately, we do find that the majority of children participate in play therapy more so when the parent or guardian is not present. Because of this, we have special rooms that have been built with these concerns in mind. While your child is being treated by our speech/language pathologist in the pediatric room, parents or guardians can observe the session in an adjacent room. Following the session, your therapist is available to discuss progress, goals to and provide suggestions for the home environment. Involving the family in all aspects of treatment is critical for carryover of skills acquired in the treatment environment.

What does therapy involve?

Treatment varies depending on the individual and the scope of their disorder. Because each individual with autism is unique with their own strengths and challenges, treatment can vary greatly.

All treatment begins with an initial assessment where we look at specific areas of development along the communication spectrum.  We are able to conduct an evaluation on children as young as 12-18 months. Recommendations are made based on results of the communication assessment.

Treatment decisions are a joint venture that includes the clinician, parents/guardians and your treating physician. All input is important to achieve optimal results from therapy.

We encourage you to speak with our staff about your unique situation so we can better inform you of specific services that match your needs.

Can you help older children with autism? What about adults?

We have a number of adult clients that receive services at Divine Savior Healthcare. Because autism is a lifelong condition, support systems, treatment plans and therapies may be needed periodically throughout an individual’s lifetime. Our goal is to ensure that each individual’s full potential is reached while maximizing independence and quality of life.

Starting treatment, no matter where you are in life, can always be beneficial. No matter which stage of life you are in, Divine Savior Healthcare is here to provide the supports and encouragement that you or your loved one needs.

How often and for how long does therapy continue?

This is dependent on the individual in need of services. Realizing that autism is a life-long disorder with no known cure, our goal is to improve the lives of individuals, their families, and our community.

We understand that all families lead busy lives, and we will work with you to find a schedule that works for you with the goals of treatment in mind.

Will my insurance cover these services?

We understand that insurance questions and expenses are a realistic concern to you. We will do whatever we can to work with your insurance to obtain the services that you and your family may need. Please do not hesitate to call with any questions. We can be reached at (608) 745-6290.
